One hundred percent of tree material removed during the preconstruction activity was recycled or salvaged by Green Waste Recycle Yard in Richmond, California.
More than 50 native plant species, for a total of 45,000 plants, were collected in the Presidio prior to construction and are now being grown in the Presidio Nursery.

Both sets of tunnels will be constructed using the cut and cover method by digging into the natural bluffs and covering the tunnels with a green pedestrian corridor.
Including a temporary bypass in the construction phasing reduced the construction duration by nearly two years.

December 2009: Construction Began

Late 2009 - Early 2012: Construction of Phase I

Construction: Phase I consists of a replacement Ruckman Bridge on Highway 1, new southbound bridge, southbound Battery Tunnel and a temporary bypass road. Watch a video of Phase I construction.

Traffic: Traffic remains on the existing Doyle Drive.

Delivery: Phase I is being constructed using California’s conventional highway project delivery method called design-bid-build. For this option, project financing is provided solely by public agencies.

Early 2012: Traffic Shift/ Weekend Closure of Doyle Drive

Upon completion of Phase I construction, Doyle Drive will be closed for a weekend in order to shift traffic onto the newly completed southbound structures and temporary bypass.

Early 2012 - 2015: Construction of Phase II

Construction: Phase II consists of a new northbound bridge, northbound Battery Tunnel, the Main Post Tunnels and the new Girard Road/Marina Boulevard/Richardson Avenue interchange.

Traffic: Traffic will travel on the southbound structures and temporary bypass road while Phase II work is completed.

Delivery: Phase II will be delivered through the public-private partnership method, which shifts responsibility for completing design and construction to a private concessionaire and makes use of long-term financing. This option also transfers responsibility for operating and maintaining the facility to the private concessionaire for 30 years.

2015: Traffic Shift/ Weekend Closure of Doyle Drive

Upon completion of Phase II construction, Doyle Drive will be closed for a second weekend in order to shift traffic off of the temporary condition and onto the final Presidio Parkway.
